The Missouri Baptist Convention logo is not what you would typically expect for a corporate image or trademark. The idea of having a logo that says “MISSOURI BAPTISTS” (who the organization serves), instead of “MISSOURI BAPTIST CONVENTION” (the name of the organization), is interesting and seems rather unique.
The original “mb” trademark was created several years ago. Like many logos, after some years of use it needed a redesign. My assignment was to improve and simplify the shapes, typography, spacing, create both “left-aligned” and “centered” orientations, as well as the mb “bug” to be used alone without the name “MISSOURI BAPTISTS.”
The blue and green color scheme of the logo matches the colors of the Southern Baptist Convention (SBC) logo as well as their Cooperative Program (CP) logo. The Cooperative Program is the primary funding source of the MBC and SBC, so you can understand why there is a desire to maintain a connection and consistency among the organizations.
When applying the “centered” logo design to print materials, it naturally calls out for a simple, centered layout. The plain, centered layout is strong and seems to work. There is no need for visual gimmicks these days when it comes to branding. Stationery is quickly becoming replaced by email and texting, and I believe that readers are becoming more comfortable with simple designs that communicate simply and clearly.
